When you are in business and have a website, it is important to remember that your website is the first thing that many potential clients see, and what they see on your site is how they come to think of you. One of the biggest mistakes that you can make is to have a site full of poor spelling and bad grammar!
If you have decided that it’s time to get serious about doing business, then it’s also time for you to get serious about the information you give on your site. Poor spelling is a real turn-off for a potential client, and many will write you off immediately when they see that you post articles and information full of misspelled words. The thing is… it is something that is very easy to correct, too!
Hey, let’s face it, we all make mistakes. We make mistakes on all kinds of things, and I believe that every one of us misspells words. I consider myself a fairly decent writer, and I know how to spell, but I still make mistakes. There are times when I type the word wrong, just a typographical error, something that anybody can do. There are also words that, admittedly, I habitually spell wrong. But, the real savior for our mistakes these days is very simple – the spell checker!
Almost every program that is on the computer includes spell checking as part of its functionality. Do you know why? Because we all make mistakes on spelling words! For writing posts on my websites and blogs, I use the Firefox web browser. Firefox automatically includes spell checking. If I type in a word with incorrect spelling, the word is underlined with a squiggly red line, so I can easily see that there is a mistake, and I can fix it.
I know of a few writers that I read regularly who are terrible spellers. It bothers me, and it gives me a lower opinion of the person when I see that they consistently misspell words. Most of the time, if the writer spells a lot of words wrong, I do not subscribe or regularly read his site. From time to time, I excuse the errors, because I find that the particular person still has a message that is important to me. But, if that person was offering his services for hire, I might have second thoughts about hiring him or her due to his spelling problem. Actually, to be honest, it is not the spelling problem that would stop me from hiring him, rather, it is his lack of concern of fixing the problems before presenting his work to the public. It would make me wonder how thorough his work would be on the project that I hired him for.
So, if you want to sell yourself to the public, put your best foot forward by using a spell checker to make sure that your website is error free before publishing! You would be doing yourself a favor!
